7:00 PM - East Side Story
(Carlos
Portugal, USA, 2006, 88 min) In this romantic comedy,
handsome young Diego, who runs a restaurant with his
grandmother, must deal with his relationship with hunky
but super-closeted Pablo, the return of his spirited
Aunt Bianca, the white gay couple who moved in across
the street, gentrifying his East LA neighborhood, and
his growing attraction for one of them. Carlos Portugal’s
feature debut is a perfect blend of raucous humor and
drama that will keep you rooting for Diego and his
search for love and happiness.
Preceded by A
Bear’s Story (Kevin Bowe, USA, 2003,
20 min) Obituary writer Robert is a heavy set gay man
who is perfectly happy with his single, solitary life….
or so he thinks…coerced by his friend, he attends
a gathering and finds a community all his own - heavy,
hairy gay guys and their admirers, collectively known
as “The Bear’s”. NY Premiere
9:30 PM – The Gymnast
(Ned
Farr, USA, 2006, 98 min) Jane Hawkins (Dreya Weber) was
once one of America’s top gymnasts, but events
and injury prevented her from fulfilling her Olympic
destiny. Almost twenty years have passed in obscurity
and Jane works as a message therapist. Jane also struggles
with a disappearing marriage and the urge to have children.
A chance meeting with Denise, a former gymnast teammate,
provokes Jane to reexamine her life and past. While visiting
a gymnasium, she is recognized by a coach who recruits
Jane for a completely different kind of venture: being
part of a Cirque Du Soleil type of aerial act. Also recruited
by Denise is Serena, a young lesbian dancer who is still
closeted to her family. When Denise can no longer coach
the two, the two decide to keep the act going and a relationship
develops. The two work well together and soon become
large parts of each others lives, but when each demands
more from the other, each is forced to step back and
make life decisions that are not so easily made. Humor,
poetic aerial movement and a tight cast and story make
this film an instant classic.

Preceded by Hung (Guinevere
Turner, USA, 2005, 12 min.) With the help of a magic
potion, five lesbian friends experience a penis for a
single day—sunrise to sunset. The day’s goal
is clear, but the means are more difficult to come by
as each puts her best foot forward to meet a special
someone.
