Mary Lou

From Eytan Fox, Director of The Bubble, Walk on Water, Yossi & Jagger

Acclaimed Israeli director Eytan Fox brings to life a modern fable with a catchy musical message and a story based on the songs of Israeli pop legend Svika Pick. Miriam (Maya Dagan) is an adoring fan of Svika Pick (who appears as himself). She dreams of being a famous singer, leading her to mysteriously abandon her son Meir (Ido Rosenberg) on his tenth birthday. Both Meir and his best school friend Shuli-who happens to be a beautiful girl-have their eye on the same gorgeous guy. But despite worthy distractions, Meir never stops searching for his mother, eventually moving to Tel Aviv and becoming famous as a drag queen named Mary Lou. The songs never stop coming as Meir/Mary Lou discovers he needs to find himself even more than his mother. More thoughtful than Glee and as spirited as Mama Mia, Mary Lou is a top-notch musical with a serious message. The film features the ebullient music of Svika Pick-who composed the Eurovision award-winning song Diva, made famous by singer Dana International. (Israel, 2010, 150 min., color, Digibeta)

Pariah

Pariah premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was awarded the Excellence in Cinematography Award[1]. In his New York Times article, film critic A.O. Scott wrote that to watch Adepero Oduye play Alike "is to experience the thrill of discovery." Scott continued by saying that "Pariah has a point to make, and a point of view to argue, but it also, above all, wants to illuminate an individual universe of meaning and emotion." Adepero Oduye was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead
